George Spann (Silk) was born and raised in St. Louis, MO. Although he now resides in prison,
Mr. Spann says "I have come to find the poet within from behind the walls of a penitentiary and the confines
of a cell. It was here that I planted and cultivated the seed of self-expression. It was here I became one
with my pen."
He states "Prison has given me nothing but time to reflect on nothing but my past and consider the possibilities of my
future. Poetry gives me the unique opportunity to document both aspects."
"To some people, prison is synonymous with silence and solitude. But my work is proof that there are voices
behind the wall of prisons in this country. Young, black, inspired voices that are desperate to speak to the
sistahs and brothas 'on the other side.'"
He adds
"I want my work to touch the heart, minds and souls of the ghetto youth, my beautiful African Queens, and the
Brothas who feel me. I too am a member of the Black community. I am a product of that community, and I will
continue to contribute and reach out to that same community. Please feel to contact me with any comments or
suggestions that you may have."
