Give Thanks! |
|
A couple of months ago, a 5-day challenge was circulating on Facebook for the participants to list three things they were thankful for on each day for three days. I accepted the challenge from a close friend. At first it was easy to list the things that most of us are thankful for — our families, our health, our blessings from God, our friends and our jobs. By the 5th day, I thought I'd be out of things I was thankful for but I found out that I had many more things to give thanks about. That was the whole point of the challenge. It made you stop and think about all the things to be thankful for. As we approach Thanksgiving and the Christmas season, we often get caught up in the hype that surrounds the holiday season and we lose sight of the true meaning of these holidays. I hear from so many people, especially on social media, that they'll be glad when the holidays have passed because the holidays stresses them out, makes them unhappy or indifferent. I agree that all the clamor to buy, buy, buy can make anyone sick and tired of all the crap that we are bombarded with. But, I feel that if we just turn off that noisy channel of our lives and pay attention to what is really important, then we'll not let all the distractions deter us from giving thanks to God for his blessings. It's not the holidays themselves that are the problem but how society has pimped and perverted these special days into one long spending and materialistic orgy. My pastor always tells us we should be thankful for waking up in our right mind and I know most of us take that happening for granted. But, when we do have problems, illnesses, setbacks and tribulations to arise in our lives, we then realize that we have had it pretty good until those things happened. We get so busy that we overlook our daily blessings. So, I say to you this holiday season, if you are in your right mind, you are breathing, you have a roof over your head, you have food to eat and you have the love of someone, anyone, then you are truly blessed and you should give thanks. Let this Thanksgiving be a time to look past the holiday rush, the Black Friday sales, the gorging of turkey and dressing and all the distractions to find a moment to give thanks. Give God the thanks He deserves. Then, reach out and help someone less fortunate than you. You'll then understand the true meaning of Thanksgiving.
