We Shall Over Come?

by Gaptoothbrotha & Trina Williams-Emigh

I'm perplexed
I'm perturbed
that of our history
we haven't listened to any a word
Of what was said
Of what was done
Of how it was fought
And how it was won
We're stuck in neutral
Damn near in park
Void of light
In the white man's holding me back
bullsh*t dark!

Did Martin stop
Did Malcolm quit
Because of them you've a place to
sit
On the bus
The Supreme Court bench
The House
The Senate
You act as if it was a cinch
We're stuck in neutral
Damn near in park
Void of light
In the white man's holding me back
bullsh*t dark!

We're living off the work of others
We need to look forward
Stop looking back
It's our time
Lets do something divine
Get out of neutral
Forget about park
Turn on the light
And get out of the white man's
holding me back bullsh*t dark!

I’m confused
I’m pissed
Our history is being dissed
We’re writing a sad chapter
Too weak to fight
Erosion of what has been won
Now heading in reverse
Like pigs wallowing in mud
Immorality is now good
Forsaking all righteousness
Ignoring the light
Get off your knees and walk like a
man!

Taking bullets for you!
Sit-ins
Jail cells with high bail!
Hung on a tree
All done in the fight to be free
Jim crow
Brown vs. The Board of Education
Cities up in flames
“Burn Baby Burn!”
The black family rolls by in a
hearse
Do we want to fight?
Do we want to do right?

The revolution has been canceled!
Ain’t enough soldiers!
Getting’ high
Shakin’ that butt
Takin’ another 40 ounce to the head
Living in decadence
But, not enough time to fight
White man what?
White man who?
The only person holding you back -
is you!
