For Old Times Sake

by Trina Williams-Emigh & the Gaptoothbrotha

For old times sake,

let's write a poem

something powerful

that marches on

like Martin for freedom

and Malcom for Justice

For old times sake,

let's compose a stanza

something everlasting

a vibing extravaganza

like Bird on sax

and Miles on horn

For old time sake,

let's pen a verse

something unbelievable

that is invitingly diverse

like Langston Hughes

and Zora Neale Hurston

For old time sake,

let's ensue a song

something memorable

a voice lifelong

like Billie Holiday

and Sarah Vaughn

For old times sake

..we connect again

..we vibe again

..write again

For old times sake,

let's write a poem

something powerful

like the clichéd fist of the green, red, and black

resurrecting Black Power!

For old times sake,

let’s compose something everlasting

like big momma’s sweet potato pie

on the 4th of July

listening to Motown in the summertime

gyrating to the beat

dancing in the streets

For old time sake,

let’s pen a verse

remembering unbelievable

something to make us laugh

like when Richard was the master

the first I heard curse

or Cosby doing stand up in a chair

two styles

making our stomachs hurt

For old times sake,

let's ensure a song

something memorable

like fight the power

delivering a message

of sweet as sugar delight

where everyone receives a break

cause it’s like that and

that’s the way it is!

For old time sake,

spooning in verse

slow grinding in stanza

poetically interlocked

vibing again

writing again

connecting
