Deeper Than The Shade Of My Skin

by B.T. Bonner & Trina Williams-Emigh

 (Trina)
 Before I stand
My Blackness precedes me and proudly demands
That you know who I am
 And where I'm from
That you know who I was
 And how far I've come
My Blackness is deeper, than the shade of my skin
It spans farther than Africa, of which I'm kin
It's stronger than the pride, of Kings and Queens
It's unforgettable, like the slaves killings scenes
 And it forwards this generation
through the blood of my veins
giving birth to the legacy, giving birth to the reign....

 (B.T.)
My Blackness is deeper than the shade of my skin
it commands that you acknowledge my skin tone
although I am not defined by my color alone
My Blackness is the wind that touches my face in the summer
and the heat that warms winter's cold hand
It is the power to rule over this land
 My Blackness is God's Plan
It is the reason that I sing from my heart, the reason that I march
It is an entire African Diaspora rising
In a land where the tides of injustice still roll in
My Blackness is the hope that will allow black boys to dream
It is the trust that can turn individuality into Black Unity
My Blackness is every breath I take,
It is deeper than the shade of my skin
 My Blackness is within......
