Freedom of Choice

by RiP and Trina Williams-Emigh

Wasn't you the one yelling freedom
Yet you lock yourself behind bars
Not only has the day been taken from you,
But even the night and its shinning stars
Your shackles and chains,
Though once removed,
Have now been returned
And you're no longer set afire,
Yet you've still been burned
By the cops you were pinched,
And you might as well have been lynched
Because by the jury you were hung
There were no freedom songs sung
Because you gave it away
Traded it for a stay
In a 3 by 6 cell
The white man's hell
Has engulfed you in its flame
And those who died for your freedom
Now bow their heads in shame

Don't you think I know this?
I mean they know it
Sorry but there are times I get confused
Forgetting not long ago I was the man in those shoes
See my sister you must understand our choices
We're given very few ways to be heard in our voices
Offered a wall to climb over or a dangerous path?
And with one we will struggle while the other brings wrath
But at least down that path we can vaguely see
Although the consequences are extreme
our will is still free
But if I struggle over that wall can you guarantee?
I will become a part and live in life's tranquility?
For dying slowly I am in this white man's hell
But I take pride that I walked in this place
And from that wall I never fell
My freedom wasn't traded just cascaded from the sky
I think it's that twinkle in the Liberty statue's eye?
But I regret the path I have taken to be in my current situation
The jury didn't need to hear a summation
They just made me a part of a 21st century plantation
By my own free will...
