Poetic Wasteland

by Unique Verses

I love poetry

But I'll tell you what I can't stand

Those "could've been" & "should've been"

Wannabe rappers who

Use poetry as a wasteland

Hiding in the belly of spoken-word

Cause hip-hop didn't accept them

Come on now

You know the type

The prototype, claim that their flow is right

Stay in the studio

Puttin industry beats behind every word they recite

It amazes me, but it's plain to see

What's scribed on their mentality

That if they can't flow like Jay-Z

Then Def Poetry is the next best thing

But real poets see right through it

Offering pseudo-justifiable reasons as to why they do it

When there's really no rhyme or reason to it

Like Columbus they think they've discovered unfound land

Bountiful with poets and other poetic contraband

Pen, paper, poetry, prose, & books

So they come and pollute it with

Freestyles, studios, beats, bars & hooks

I tell em

When you step into the world of

A true verbal visionary

Your words should be

Lyrically literary

Cerebrally touch the ones that sit in their seat

Make them nod their heads in agreement

Instead of to a rhythmically well looped beat

Before you wonder into this poetic cipher and start chokin

Pimpin the hip-hop genre as your token

Make sure your every word...is spoken
