Self-Preservation

by Tameko L. Barnette

within myself – I live hard and strong
nights are much shorter, my days are long
my heart beats like the rhythm in a drum line
and dreams mingle with freedom in my mind
flowers grow, no water needed or seeds planted
my road is long, wide, and it’s angle is slanted
I pause for the hungry, the homeless, and confused
for the underprivileged, dazed, battered and abused
I sit quietly in meditation stance lifted high
pondering all that is good, seeking answers to Why?
I live within the corners of my mind forever
it’s the one thing that has kept my life together
