For Many Men I Know (And May Have Dated)

by Karen Talley

It's not that you don't want
Someone special in your life
But you're hesitant
For there are fragments of your broken heart
Blowing about in the wind
And you have neither
The strength nor the courage
To chase after them
And though your heart
Is merely a shallow frame
You guard it with much vigor
For if no one has access to it
It can't be broken again, you figure
And though I try to reach inside you
With the gentlest of fingers
You push me away because the pain
Of a heavy hand still lingers
And even though thoughts of love
Fill your night and day dreams
You try to act nonchalant
When it appears, or so it seems
You dress yourself in many lovers
So you don't have time to care
So no one person can penetrate your soul
And find out what's really there
It's not that you don't want
Someone special in your life
But you're just hesitant
For there are fragments of your broken heart
Blowing about in the wind
And you have neither
The strength nor the inclination
To chase after them
