Early Morning Hours

by Karen Talley

As night comes to a close and daylight breaks
I turn and take a long hard look at my new lover's face
It's funny how someone so wild and hard
Can be so soft and vulnerable in the early morning hours

It almost seems as if he smiles in his sleep
Not mockingly, but lovingly, and my heart takes a leap
It's funny how someone so strong and boastful
Can be so gentle and quiet in the early morning hours

I sneak and trace his lips with my fingertips,
Yet I dare not kiss him and ruin the moment
This is a time of intimacy
We couldn't share if he were awake
And so, I allow him to sleep
And one last long look I take
And I lie comfortably in his arms
As I wait for him to wake
