Chains

by Karen Talley

We are still bound in chains.
The chain of alcoholism still confines many men.
The chain of crack has ruined many a woman.
Molestation, self-deprivation, total desparation,
Of human life-no consideration
No hope, no faith, no belief, no religion,
No cause, no stands, no peace, just guns.
Sexing, dancing, hips swaying.
No meditation, fasting, and praying.
The chain of ignorance still holds us, too.
"Who is you?" "Where you is?"
"Why should I vote when I ain't got no hope?"
Fool, get off the dope.
No employment, underemployment.
Some education, no education,
No sense of jubilation.
Let's work together
To break these chains.
Let's bind ourselves in
Love, unity, hope, peace,
Faith, and constant prayer.
Together, we can break the chains.
