Good Hair

by Simone Boone

Girl, you got some real good hair,
Yo daddy must be white.
What he do? Leave ya'll
after spending just one night
with your mom? She sho is lucky
to wake up ev'ry day,
ain't got to worry if her baby girl
hair gon' lay.

No pressin' combs waiting
on the stove for you.
Shoot! a few passes with your fingers
and, girl, you be through!
Yo' hair be like a baby dolls,
so soft and black and fine.
My mama said it look like
birds took nest in mine.

What's wrong baby?
What's up with all them tears?
Don't get all choked up
just 'cause yo daddy aint never here.

What? You say he don't claim ya?
He don't even care?
Girl, hush up, wipe yo eyes,
and thank God you got good hair!
