When I Said-I Love You

(The Covenant)

by E. T. Scyffore

When I said, I love you
Believe there were no strings attached.
Neither were my words masked behind a cloak of
hidden agendas, and crafty notions.
My words only revealed a heart that secretly longs
to return to a time when our love was uninhibited,
and free to express itself in every way.
We feared not the stares and whispers of others,
we only desired to be as one--unconditionally
the way God intended love to be.
When I said, I love you
Please forgive me if I made you feel ashamed.
Especially since the road once traveled had led us in
different directions-
causing wounds--leaving the other helpless and
feeling marooned.
The only alternative was to seek to fill a void that only
a true covenant could bring.
Two people becoming as one--the way God intended marriage to be.
So when I said, I love you
I only spoke out of the need to have you near me:
as two people rejoined in holy matrimony
the way God intended for us to be.
