They Heard Our Song In The Night

by Joyce Rogers

Please remember the ones
Who refused to hold their peace.
Instead of turning their heads away
They sought for our release.

They saw our blood as it ran like oil. Running defiantly into America's soil. They saw our homes scattered in the wind As we fought to save them again and again.

They heard our song in the night.

Ashamed of what their White brothers had done, They determined that America Would hear our song.

We received them freely, Without any blame, Together our efforts became One formidable flame.

They song with us. They prayed with us. They marched with us. They were beaten with us. They were jailed with us. Some even died with us, All because…

They heard our song in the night.

Their willingness to fight Proved that all whites were not alike. They contended against their own That injustice might be dethroned.

They fought along with us, that our vision Would not be vain. We must not let our memory of them Be like sugar in the rain.

Because surely...They heard our song in the night.
