Deep

by Jacqueline E. Price

how deep is your tone
I don't care how dark or light your skin
or how thick or thin
does your blackness bear deep to the bone
I don't care how light your eyes
or how high your thighs
I don't even care what shade you are
whether light, medium, or dark
I wanna know how deep is your tone
does your blackness bare deep to the bone
I am not hung up on Master's place jealousies
"look at the sister, look at that brother"
"he or she thinks she is cute because they lighter than me"
I am not governed by Plantation rules
I an only concern with how dark your juice
How deep is your tone
does your blackness bare deep to the bone
I am not wrapped up in small mindedness
that a black man changes once he or she is labeled success
respect due to the almighty kings and queens that rise
for it is hope that we to can better our lives
don't get caught with the rope around you neck
shakles still dangling from your feet
love the skin that you are in, embrace the juice for it is sweet
it is the nectar that the others want to taste
the need to procreate before they go to waste
so don't get caught hanging from no damn tree
because light, medium, or dark you to are black as me
how deep is your tone
does your blacknes bare deep to the bone
when you listen, can you hear it, your sweet Ancestors singing
"swing low sweet chariot coming forth to carry me home"
we have generations of melanin to multiply
hell we don't need no damn clones
hell if I am trying to get to outer space
here on earth I am stil trying to find my place
how deep is your tone
does your blacknes bare deep to the bone
be Mother, be Father
be Brother, be Sister
be Lover, be Reciever
be Teacher, be Preacher
be Desire, be Pleasure
be Fire,be Admired
how deep is your tone
does your blackness bare deep to the bone
how deep is your tone
