Haliwa-Saponi Manchild

by Alice Parris

Today, a newborn manchild
Cried with the lungs of a warrior.
Penciled in errors on birth certificates
Could not erase the DNA crying out
For unity. Haliwa-Saponi roots, deep
As the sycamore tree require that the
Assimilated, dismembered members
Gather again into "The Meadows."
Tribal roots embedded in the earth that
Received them, have been too deep
To be uprooted by conventional means.
Now, telling fruits require that the history
Of this people be told in their language
(not forgotten) of Native American glory .
Seedtime and harvest will always remain for
This overlooked, yet great, unforgotten people.
