Remembering

by Nyahbinghi

I remember...
Chinese plums, five for twenty-five cents
Eating half a lemon with peppermints
Red Kool-aid on hot summer days
Bean dip and Frito-lays
Hot pavement on my bare feet
Snow-cone man coming down my street
Mama with a hot comb pressing my nappy hair
School days beginning with the Lord's Prayer
Black light posters were on everybody's wall
Recess at school playing a game of dodge ball
Buying crackerjacks for the prize not the taste
Working that hula hoop around my waist

Sometimes I wish I could relive
those simple, carefree times
But instead, I guess I'll just have to remember…
