Beautiful Black Me

by Nyahbinghi

I have grown my hair out
from its former relaxed state
call it natural, call it nappy
it's just no longer straight

As I look at me in the mirror
I'm pleased with the woman I see
‘cause I see who I really am
not whom you think I should be

Was unconsciously going through life
changing me to suit everyone else
well it's time to just be me
and put the salt on the shelf

I'm living life to the fullest
mentally and spiritually free
free from the binding chains
placed on me by society

Now headed in the right direction
as I walk through the opened door
releasing my creative self
realms yet to explore

On my quest for spirituality
I've learned to swim upstream
and recognize my own potential
as an Afrikan goddess queen
