The Trial

by Nigel Daring

The trial lasted several days,
Time for the verdict
The nation glued to the TV set
"Not guilty"
The race was offended
Not because they knew that particular victim
They knew they could've been him
They felt history beating at their backs:
Slavery, discrimination, recrimination
All the wrongs suffered at their hands
Here was another one
A reminder of their place in society
This trial hit them with reality
They were not free
They returned to normalcy of the abnormal
After some protests
The society scoffed, rebuffed, fluffed on lies hiccupped
And they knew, everybody knew
This case just one of a few
Daily this is what they go through
