So, Why Not Me?

by H.L. Nichols

You seem to be happiest with him,
It’s as if you like him to hit it and leave,

Unlike bed partners you’ve called boyfriends,
I’ve been your surrogate man through the tears,

So, Why not me?

It’s my shoulder you cry on,
Been here through their countless affairs,

Days like today I had hoped you’d gotten married,
So I would have gone on with my life and died,

So, Why not me?

I’ve loved you for ½ a score and 3 years,
The DJ spins Someone to Hold by 112,

Sensually we dance the dance of 1,000 amors,
Through poetic verse came together at least 999 more,

So, Why not me?

You sincerely gave yourself to please him,
But I’m the one who feels you, wants to please you,

We’ve traversed this road BACK AND FOURTH before,
I’ve loved but my love for you won’t let me go,

So, Why not me?

Beloved I want to do right by you,
Be by your side for better or for worse,

If it’s love you said you want,
See I’m the man you need,

So, Why not me?
