The Dream

by H.L. Nichols

We are today President
Yet we have been Kings
Rulers of the richest nations
Had the finest of everything

But let neither achievement
Pacify the best of us
Until all of Langston's children
Be granted opportunity to actualize
The Dream

Our children's plight is the effect
Let us not be remembered as their cause
Let our legacy be that we truly believed
That every child has a God given birthright
To Dream

Let not their needs define them
Or hopelessness continue to confound them
So that our fight is
The availability of progressive knowledge
Such that failure is the choice of leaders
Not a wound upon lambs
Inflicted by birth
