The Good Man You Prayed For

by H.L. Nichols

I called you last night the machine picked up,
Reminisced about lemon meringue and how our conversation began,
Fingerprinted like a convict caller ID’d (6) times,
I stand accused of trying to get through to tell you that . . .

I’m the Good Man you prayed for...
What God intended for me to be,

I called you last night to hear your comforting voice,
You were to the point quick you had to go,
Sent bouquets of flowers to uplift your spirit,
To find your smile just in case you were down,

I’m the Good Man you prayed for...
What God intended for me to be,

I called you last night the phone rang and rang,
Prepared to entice you with Giant Eagle Chinese Marble Cookies,
Speak to you with a poem and offer some encouraging words,
“Lady, I am the ladder to help you reach your goals”,

I’m the Good Man you prayed for...
What God intended for me to be,

I’m not calling no more cause you don’t return my call,
Tell me God, Why do Good Men finish last?
I gotta be a man, kill these feelings, play through the pain,
Knowing damn well I await your call pondering how to begin to tell you that
...

I’m the Good Man you prayed for...
What God intended for me to be,

A month ago you said, “He’s here but I want you to call.”
What has changed since then? Did your heart let him back in?
Have you forgotten the Good Man you prayed for?
Forgotten Who I am? Remember Why I was sent?
