Lucasville Blues

by Malkiese Paythress

Institutionalized
frozen young mind
another stat trapped by the myth of rehabilitation
another brotha's life wasted
waiting to be terminated by the powers that be in control
so many years stole
again and again
reawakening agitated tension
that was trying to settle

The path of freedom...
blocked by bars of heavy metal
billy clubs and gun towers
in a place where the weak get devoured
mentalities get readjusted by the cold surroundings
then they exist more abrasively
not an ideal place to be

District attorneys know very little
of the other side of the walls and fence
continually pushing for the maximum sentence
public defenders scared to rebut this
so a margin of our population stays stuck and caught up
in the mess that was made of the judicial system

Nobody warned them
and for more than some
nobody remembered the children

Leg shackles and handcuffs
are the modern day lynch noose
slowly suffocating generations
no more room to breathe
no more space to release
nothing left but caged rage and anger
torching the mirage of a world at peace
thoughts of tranquility gone
as reality gets erased to caged emptiness
