A World That Knew Me Not

by Makalani

I woke up to a world that knew me not
But used my gifts and talents the same
A world that only cared about defaming me
Seeing a number, never my name

I woke up to a world that never looked within
To see me for who I am;
But is more than happy to highlight my wrongs
My mistakes- it's all a scam

I woke up to a world that saw the exterior-
Another hoodlum, another gangster, another one of "them Blacks"
Another dead beat father to be
Another seller of crack

I woke up to a world where money is supreme
Morals and values don't matter
The keys to success are simple
Just cash and the ability to flatter

I woke up to a world that saw me as a hindrance
Another person to be in its way;
Some guy to make more babies in the US
Go to jail and force everybody else to pay

I woke up to a world that loves me when I'm a puppet
A poor player in its show
A world that wants my mind undeveloped
And my mouth never saying no

I woke up to a world that didn't care if I lived
What difference would my death make?
Millions and millions of my ancestors died;
But what commotion did that make?

I woke up to a world that threw me away
A world that is scarred with shame
A world that seeks to destroy me-
That Negro without a name
