Pool of Enlightenment

by Joshua A. Parker

Moments whisper plain secrets upon heavy ears
Come
Past intricate avenues crossing temple precincts of Amun-Re'
Past vast terra-cotta columns and gates fixed with timeless deeds
Past full and glistening mocha maidens dissolving in her maw
Come further, away from callings of sweet sunset ripe dates
Aromas of bread threading green and lavender vineyards
Past gazing stone, guarding precise gateways to the underworld
Where arid grains of beige wave without hope
And azure air melts, never to congeal
To an oasis
Revealing a reflection of one whose pure melanin skin gleams
Likewise, this one has been dipped in the sun's glory
A shimmering image whose eyes show slumber
Troubling the water has yet to alter
Those eyes
A people terrible from their beginning, scattered and peeled
Why then do our eyes yet slumber?
That those from far off lands have come to bask
In riches of your very shadow
At the expense of youth once wise enough rule empires
Quickly, purge your innermost being with this liquid of luminance
Let it saturate you, fill you, bestowing lost ideals and power unimagined
Awake. Awake. Awake I say!
Come alive and take drink
