Apologies to Ralph Ellison: We're Calling In The Militia to Re-Write Juneteenth

by Stephen E. Jordan, II

"Nigger / Can you kill / Can you kill /
Can a nigger kill / Can a nigger kill a honkie"
          taken from
 The True Import of Present Dialogue: Black vs. Negro
          by Nikki Giovanni, 1968

Sho' 'nuff - he did it!
Sho' 'nuff - he killed him!

Claiming to be John Wayne
(when he's a Callahan)
riding into the sunset
(when he's the Tonto);

Claiming to put things together,
Make 'em good
(when he ain't no Elmer's glue);
Claiming to be able to amputate,
Take out the disease
(when he's no Dr. Feel Good Garvey).

Sho' 'nuff - he did it!
Sho' 'nuff -he killed him!

Claiming to be "Da Man"
With his lily-white grin
(stolen from Mr. Ellison,
who tosses and turns in his bed);
Claiming he got a pocket-full
Of royalties last Christmas
(this Christmas too),
when poor Fanny,
the real Phenomenal Woman,
ain't got a pot to piss in
or a window to throw it out.

Sho' 'nuff -he did it!
Sho' 'nuff-he killed him!

She asked if I could kill a honkie.
Clenching the bastardized Juneteenth,
I said, "Yeah, is this a good reason?"
