Used To Know You...

by Lakesha Jenkins

I used to know you….
When you had nothing to your name, no hope for a brighter tomorrow,
No clue of why you had to suffer so much pain
I used to know you….
When you knew the words please and thank you,
I’m sorry, please forgive me, excuse me, I love you, I need you
I used to know you….
When you considered me an associate, a friend, your best friend, your woman, lover, best sex ever, more than just sex
I used to know you….
When no challenge was too big to overcome, every goal was attainable, everything you touched turned to gold, you could do wrong
I used to know you….
In your youthful naivety, your willingness to change, desire to do the right thing, to be a better man than your father was
I used to know you….
When you were my biggest fan, greatest defender, strongest ally, fiercest competitor, most trustworthy confidante
I used to know you….
When you were a king sitting on a throne, glistening warrior, believer in truth, worshiper of the most high
I used to know you….
Before you were stolen from our most precious land, stripped of your pride, separated from family, denied your identity
I used to know you….
When your women were sacred, your children raised in communities, elders revered, faith was strong
I used to know you….
When you recognized this world to be temporary, when your eyes sought GOD’s glory, when the only treasure you sought was your spirit’s salvation
I used to know you….
But that seems so long ago
Now my words fall on deaf ears
My tears continually flow
For you have forgotten all that WE were
So lost in their lies and propaganda
No longer captives but captive in our minds
Now I regret that I knew you…
I hang my head in shame
Wishing I never used to know you….My black man
