Elastic Heart

by Lakesha Jenkins

My elastic heart can no longer stretch or bend....
it is ragged with the wear of life's twists & turns
Its been pulled in too many directions
Sometimes I fear its already broken....
It sags in places that once snapped back into place
Misshaped by the cruel intentions of lovers
Betrayals by women I once called sisters
Afraid to exert itself in the pursuit of dreams
Yeah, my elastic heart is broken
It cannot be put back together
It won't be recycled...to worn from repeated cycles
Directionless
Snapped into place
Loyal to no 1
Stoic in its hard, battle-worn armor
Locked away from life, other people, love
My elastic heart is no longer elastic
