Kill Or Be Killed

by LaKesha Jenkins

Your hands which once brought caresses now bring with them
the most dangeous hurt with your clenched fists
Your eyes once filled with love, tenderness, gentleness
now flash within seconds a warning to "Shut my goddamn mouth!"
that your mouth later says aloud
Our lovemaking once a thing of beauty is now twisted
into a frightful aftermath of the war that only you fought
Scarred and bruised into dark shades of velvet,
black, purple,crimson and blue
but what about hurts inflicted on my soul that can never be removed
I jump when you reach for me wondering which personality has prevailed
I search your face deperately hoping it is friend instead of foe
You are physically stronger than me so when those arguments erupt
I already know the victor will once again be you
To ashamed to tell my secret,
too prideful to ask for help,
growing ever more afraid of you
Cause sometimes in a violent relationship
it becomes kill them before they kill you
