John Jeffrey Scott is an African American man, father, and son, raising 2 young boys in a time of chaos and death. He says "The futility and haunting images of our youth, unconcerned and uncaring about their lives and future, lead me to write the poem 'Poem for Life.' Our young people throw away their promise and future, long before it is realized. And more tragically, the future and lives of their peers, who have no part in their day to day transactions.
