What If

by Zamounde Allie and Jamal Sharif

What if I was you and you was me
Would you cry more than I curse
Would we differently see
Or sing melodic notes of the same verse
Could we equally level
Could weary hands work together
The same shit we'd shovel
From now until forever
I wonder what if
You was me and I was you
Our feet planted seeds
From which destinies grew
Would they grow deeper than sowed
Would divine knowledge unfold
If traced back would they show
What we need to know
That poets like we
Trod on faithfully
We keep steppin' though
The load is heavy to tow
Books deny us
Yet, try we must
Unruly people discuss
And often distrust
How our word flowers bloom from dust
No matter how hard you cry or how much I cuss
From brain water dripped in a bowl
Listen with your deepest heart
We speak not only to the ear, but to the soul
