Who Will Comb My Nappy Hair

by Idalia Willis

Where is love now
He died the day of my conception
No honor, no pride, no war for peace
But for a nickel and dime crime
Wrong place, wrong time

Where is love now
She died the day I was born
A struggle to give me life meant for strife
She lived an arm and needle life
Birthing me with a habit that’s not rightfully mine
A false high was her crime

Will I find love gone to rest
Who will me a nurturing breast
Who do I bond to
Where is love now

Who will take me to school
Who will show me how to tie my shoes
Who will hug me and kiss me good night
Who will tuck me in at tight
Who will how me how to fly a kite
Where is love now

Who will caress my aching heart when it cries
Was it for me that they died
Were they happy I was inside
Were they waiting for me to arrive
Will I too live a life of crime
I’m born with a habit that is not rightfully mine
Why did I survive with no one to love me
Void of all who were meant to care
Who will comb my nappy hair
