Love's Highways

by Monie T. Jackson

I think we all enjoy the thrill of the chase
Getting to know the other person
Being excited by something new.
But what happens once after the newness,
and rawness of those initial meetings wear off?
That seems to be where I get lost
On the highways of love.
Somehow
I end up being detoured in another direction
Somehow
Things have taken on a different perception
The other person has not ultimately been on the same road to love as you have been
And I find myself having to break out the map again
looking for a fresh new route
a fresh new start
a start that will lead me the that wonderful city
full of life and wonderment, called Love.
I would like to be able to set up residence there eventually - permanent residence
instead of finding myself in a homeless shelter
of the unwanteds.
Someday I will find someone willing to take a ride with me
perhaps traveling the slow lane on the backroads.
Together, we can enjoy the scenery
take in the beauty of what we see as we travel life’s roads
review and reminisce about all the places
we have been
and even discuss new travel plans
to somewhere new.
Many destinations lie ahead
All we need is the license to drive,
A stamped passport maybe
Take a ride with me.
