Bridging The Gap

by James Harris

Lord, give me the strength to bridge the gap;
and then to keep on going and not once look back.
You've been shaping, defining, nursing
and guiding me every step of the way:
I'd fall...you'd pick up; I'd cry...
you'd console and carry me through another day.
Sins have been purged, I've been submerged
and I stand here trembling a bit:
you've brought me this far;
to do what I'm not sure and I'm much too excited to quit!
Please Lord, give me the strength to bridge the gap
and then to keep on going and not once look back!
To be all that I can, with you as my friend
and to spread with joy your word:
I see eyes come aglow and ears tilt like so,
when hope conquers defeat is heard.
Not wanting to fall, I stand at your call
saying "Maybe this side of the fence I should stay:"
not wanting to offend because you know where I've been,
am I really your must needs for today?
If so Lord, give me the strength to bridge the gap
and then to keep on going and not once look back!
