Across the Tracks

by Larry Guidry

Across the tracks a nigger walked to hear for the liberty bell
Across the tracks a nigger talked of a loved one that had been thrown in jail
For his freedom to not be treated like a slave that black was 1/3 human, to be tamed and never set free,
Across the tracks a nigger felt the blood run down his face,
from hands who felt that a nigger should know his place,
Across the tracks a nigger witnessed a rope tied to a tree
with a mob stood by watching and drinking then sets flames to an old oak tree,
Across the tracks a nigger shed a tear for his fellow man
Thought maybe white is better because being a negro they don’t understand
Across the tracks a nigger witness his father couldn’t vote
Across the tracks a nigger saw “WHITE ONLY” signs posted at the polls
Across the tracks a white boy asked a nigger what it means to be black
He dressed him as a nigger and said follow me across the tracks
