I Used to Know You...My Black Man

by Trina-Williams Emigh

I knew You when......
You were vulnerable
caught up in your youth
incapable of blame

I knew You when......
You were searching
denying answers
despite their claim

I knew You when......
You were proud
steeped in self worth
growing into your frame

I knew You when......
You embraced life
took on its challenge
stating an aim

I knew You when......
You fought the battle
accepted the fight
and won the game

I knew you when......
We walked side by side
Then - I was more than sex
and you had no fame

I knew You when......
You respected Me
protected Me
supported Me
gave Me Your name

I knew You when......
And I rejoiced in you
now I regret that I...
hang my head in shame

I knew you when......
A throne is where you reigned
You must’ve forgotten that
Cause look what you’ve became

I knew You when......
But that seems like long ago
when i was the moth
and You were the flame

I knew you when......
Now frequent tears I do shed
For you have forgotten that WE
are how this all began
I used to know YOU........My Black Man
