Proud, So Proud

by Trina Williams-Emigh

I wasn't there but I watched you
As you struggled with yourself

As you decided no longer
Was your life to be put upon a shelf

As you spoke for yourself, your people
And your world
Promising a new us would unfurl

So you stepped forward
You stepped up
To the beginning of a new day
Where on the horizon the pain of struggle
Shall be swept away

Where every man is equal
And every woman free-to praise
Her black man on his journey to peace
