In Our Own Words

by Trina Williams-Emigh

Did I reach you,
Speaking in a language eloquent in its sound.
Possessive of the past, present and future
Expressions,
Slang,
Colloquialism
Of African American culture.
Vocalizing the poetic rhythm of a dialect,
that is simple, yet complex.
It's like Shakespeare;
Everybody doesn't understand it,
but that doesn't stop em from trying too.
It has a beat,
A cadence,
A melodic harmony.
Listen to the poets verse it,
nd the rappers recite it.
It snares you,
Seizes you,
Makes you listen to it's rhyme.
Spoken in our own words.
From the folklore,
To the tall tales,
Too the poetry line.
