No Purpose, No Reason

by Trina Williams-Emigh

I know you suffered for me
And today, you're just some quick blurb this month on tv
Sorry the dream was defered, like a raisin in the sun
And our backs were turned as the new day begun
The revolution has dispersed
Again we are cursed
The freedom songs once sung
Are tied to the tree from which you were hung
Let freedom ring
Is no longer our thing
And seldom do we rise
Our eyes are no longer on the prize
And the judges mallot
has replaced the bullet or the ballot
By any means necessary...
Is just a phallus-cy
just a phase in a book
Who we be?....Well..we be the crook
Who benefited from your pain
What you strived for, we did gain
Yet the victory wasn't won
And instead of us rewarding your efforts,
We haven't even begun
You weren't allowed to read, we can and won't
Hadn't the right to vote, we do and don't
Stripped from your family, we choose not to be one
You had a purpose, but we don't even have a reason
