I Too Sing America

by Trina Williams-Emigh

I too sing America
Of beautiful spacious skies
Land my ancestors decry
Voice unheard
Life awry

I too sing America
Of amber waves of grain
Land to where the slaves came
To spill their blood
And lose their name

I too sing America
Of purple mountain majesty
Land of our captivity
Forced bondage
Beaten productivity

I too sing America
Of justice and liberty
Land of hostility
Legal genocide
Humane invisibility

I too sing America
Of one nation under God
Land that’s left us scarred
Broken dreams
Happiness barred

I too sing America
Of taking lawful action
Land where civil rights begun
Gathered momentum
Continues to be spun

I too sing America
Of rising above all
Despite the drudging toil
I remain
Rooted deep in America’s soil
