On Deaf Ears

by Trina Williams-Emigh

I fear that you don't listen
when you hear me speak
though my voice is booming
like sub-woofers
blaring in the street

I hear you voice your violence
Ak and Mac-ten

I hear you voice your desire
to subjugate women

I hear you voice your anger
of another's race

I hear you judge your people
as if you have that place

I hear you!
I hear you!
I hear you!

But what the hell do you really say?
You spit out more rhetoric
than a politician, finally caught astray

You hear me speak of unity
You hear me speak of peace
You hear me speak of humanity
that seems to elude us each

Even though my sub-woofers are blaring,
echoing in the street
the volume of what I'm saying
deafens, at your feet
