Black and Blue Over You

by Trina Williams-Emigh

I thought I was over you
But here I go again
Dayum this is truly driving me insane
I remember the sweet things you said
And all the nice things you would do
I still have the poems you wrote me
……oh yeah – huh - and that scar you left on my cheek
You lavished me with trinkets
Pampered me with spoils
…..Then broke my shoulder when you slammed me into a wall
Candlelight dinners
And picnics in the park
…….Welts on my back from your weekly belt whippings
Loving
Cuddling
Safe in your arms
…..Now I lie in this bed paralyzed from head to toe
Yet I can’t stop thinking of you
What did I do?
What did I say?
I slaved
I listened
I obeyed
I even begged
So I just can’t understand why you put that bullet through my head
It’s not enough that I’ve been black and blue for you
Now you want me dead
