Been There - Heard That

by Trina Williams-Emigh

What can I say that hasn’t already been said
By writers of poetry both alive and dead
The sun has been exalted
The harvest moon glorified
The earth has been worshiped
The heavens mystified

What can I say that hasn’t already been said
By preachers of faith with a message to spread
That joy is how we cope
And unity our congregation
That love is our hope
And God our salvation

What can I say that hasn’t already been said
By the voices of the community and those who have led
Such as, by any means necessary
And still we rise
To overcome our adversary
Keep your eyes on the prize

What can I say that hasn’t already been said
By singers of songs and the lyrics we’ve read
Like, we’ve only just begun
Don’t give up the fight
Are you the one
Who would die……would you die for your rights

What can I say that hasn’t already been said
Nothing, but that doesn’t stop me from emptying my head
Of a repeated thought and an already recited word
Because I don’t know of anything that hasn’t already been heard
