The Pride of the Tribe

by Deja' Rae

I was taken away from what I knew and believed,
And forced into a world too hard to conceive.
I was carried across the waters and sold on foreign soil,
Then taught to work for it and forever remain loyal.
But with the pride of the tribe still etched in my soul,
I proudly proclaimed the victory, for I was Strong! Black! and Bold!

I was beaten, humiliated, stripped of pride and raped,
I was spat on and taught the meaning of hate,
But in spite of it all I still refused to cry,
Because my soul was still burning with African pride.
With the pride of the tribe still etched in my soul,
I proudly proclaimed the victory, for I was Strong!
Black! and Bold!

Those after me fought for the rights that we once possessed,
In the land where my ancestors accomplished many wondrous quests.
It was a long and hard journey, but they continued the fight,
Every hour, second, minute, every day and every night.
With the pride of the tribe still etched in their souls,
They proudly proclaimed the victory, for they were Strong!
Black! and Bold!

My advice to those who did not have to take that deadly voyage,
Is to be of good faith, unmovable strength and tremendous courage.
Keep the Almighty in your hearts and never give up the fight,
To claim those things that have given to us by GOD
it is only what's right.
Keep the pride of the tribe etched in your souls,
Proudly proclaim the victory, for you are Strong!
Black! and Bold!

I say to my children of today, release the anger and shame
from the years past,
Press forward with vigor, for you can accomplish any task.
Just look back at your ancestor's battered and torn flight,
Take hold of our wings and cleave to them with all of your might,
Because we have the pride of the tribe etched in our souls,
And we will proudly proclaim the victory, for we are Strong!
Black! and Bold!
