Graceful Queen Mamie

by B.J. Burgins

The misunderstood Queen
within her earthly voyage
sweltering in wisdom & strength,

"Keep a dollar in my pocket
to keep the haints off me"
not much money,
but ever free.

"I ain't scared of nobody
that messes behind two heels,"
talking her talk
but ever more frustrating
to frightened and senseless ones,
because she walked the walk.

To herself all the time,
tending to her own vineyard
staying true to her moniker
"Stay outta folks house
'cause then they can't lie on you,"

and while sailing on her voyage
she tried to give love and laughter
but to herself always true,
and she's ever more alive today
though through further depths of her voyage
she had to sail away,
but leaving her verbal epitaph
lingering in heeding ears,
"Don't give 'em nothing to talk about
and they won't have nothing to talk about,"

on her voyage gracefully
sharing outwardly
but innerly to herself only known
'cause "People don't do to fool with"
and that way, peacefully
she found Her Way Home.
