Young's Plight: Something Grandma Might Agree With

by B.J. Burgins

As if they've
never been young before:

They say go to church,
minute you do
they try to make sure
you get no blessing
and try their damnest
to dissuade your return

they say get a job,
go to school,
moment you do
all openings become closed
and obtaining a degree
seems useless
when they won't
grant an opportunity
to use it;
they don't want you
bothering 'em
but they won't help
to see that you don't
have to,
but if you're
sagging, clubbing,
doing nothing,
it makes 'em
feel better 'cause you're no threat
to their comfort
forgetting they were once like you,
just another bunch trying...

If your own refuse to help
what shall you do
and who'll take a stand
to see the next generation thru,
me, you, we?...
