Why We Die Young

by B.J. Burgins

Too busy
trying to be real cool:

keeping up
with the Jones' games,
determined not to
be left out,

not following
our own minds
to find our
own specific duty,
too afraid
to be whom
we're meant to be-

in the right way
led astray
by the generations
that put us down
because they no longer
want responsibility,
so we lead ourselves
and find
more worth
in trying to be
real cool.
