swelling up with broken pride
while salty tears long to roll from her eyes
trying to hold back the hurt that's brewin inside
as she steps into the darkness
of a damp cell to witness
the hell that she prayed she'd never have to visit
then he arrives
draped in chains from his waist
to his wrists that fall down by his sides

as she looks into his eyes and says

with both hands pressed against the clear wall
staring into the scared eyes of her daughter's first born
the images startle and shake her heart
taking her back to the ole'  schoolyard
back to a time when life was real tough
battling the demons that couldn't hate enough
{she smiles and says}

jus pray to God before ya lays down to rest

years of the struggles wear and tear
scream from her body
as she rises to leave her chair
a deep helplessness fills her body
as she fights to breathe
inhales the stale air
and falls to her knees
