A Child Travels Too Soon Into Adulthood

by Charles Curtis Blackwell

        Reap river reap
	Beyond repair
	She a thang of beauty
	Before corn could be shucked
	Into pans of lard livin'
And no gamble for hard lovin'
Never was much to gaze at
	On a Friday night
	Not when she/Abbie was ten
	Chasing ghost and running cows
	Up from the pasture
	Moonglow over Louisiana
And she became a woman at twelve
        "Preacher man, deliver me
Preacher man lend me a hand
	To lead me," Abbie cries
Mournful to the touch of corn
	Now turned liquor/turned feed
	For all those to see
	Little Abbie junior floating
		Deep river, Deep river
		Carry me home
In search of his mothers mint
		Her mirth
		        The fragrance of marshlands nearby
                        Screaming
		        Deep river
		        Sloshing against the shore
