Have You Seen Daddy

by Beulah Gordon-Skinner

Sis, have you seen daddy-
he left five years ago
his exodus so sudden
as if we would not know
Love for us:
Endless
'though he'd seldom tell,
in our hearts we for us
"He'd go as far as hell
to singe his eyebrows",
he'd say
do you know what he meant-
raising fifteen black children
in a white man's world-
through an earthly hell
he'd been sent.
Sis, have you seen daddy-
has he found exquisite peace at last
his days were spent
in segregated turmoil
now in stone his life is cast
Sis, have you seen daddy-
you joined him two years ago
although know you cannot answer
I'd surely like to know:

Sis, have you seen daddy?

*****

In memory of all fathers who were there for
and with us during the "struggle".
